IMPORTAINT: Conference organizers are looking for volunteers among conference participants, who would be able to help with driving the participants to the conference site. The volunteers will be asked to pick up participants arriving/departing at similar times, on their way to/from the conference site.
Attendees will be accomodated in the Kananaskis Field Station, University of Calgary ecosystem research facility located at the edge of Canadian Rockies. Due of the location, there are extensive possibilities for hiking and (weather permitting) skiing. The web site of the field station (at http://www.kfs.ucalgary.ca/index.php) gives some further information.
Accomodation is a little spartan, but adequate. The price is about 40 CAD per day, including three meals per day. If you require more comfortable environment, here are two hotels available in Kananaskis Village, 17km from KFS, or in Canmore (40km from KFS).
The conference site is next to provincial highway 40 on the shore of Barrier lake
in Kananaskis valley, Alberta. A (rather poor) satellite image of the site can
found on Google Earth:
A better idea of the site is given by the topographic map "Canmore 82-O/3",
published by Natural Resources Canada.
If you would like to program the coordinates of the site to a GPS unit, the UTM grid zone is 11U.
The map uses WGS84/NAD83 datum. A small section of the map, including the conference site can be found here:
The official tourist map of the Kananaskis valley is available at: http://www.cd.gov.ab.ca/enjoying_alberta/parks/featured/kananaskis/pdfs/KananaskisValleyMap.pdf.
There is only very limited public transportation available to the workshop site (see airport shuttle). The organizers will provide transportation between Calgary Airport and the conference site on April 21st and April 25th for participants who require it. In order to be included in the transportation arrangements, you must inform the organizers about your arrival and departure time, including the name of the carrier and the flight number.
In order to drive to the conference site from Calgary International Airport:
Detailed driving directions from Calgary International Airport can be found on Google Maps. If for some reason Google Maps is not available, the relevant maps are:
